BUICK
BUICK (1903 to the Present)
Buick was founded in 1903 by David Dunbar Buick. An experimental
prototype was produced that year. A production prototype was produced by mid-1904. The
first car sale occurred in August 1904. William C. Durant gained control of Buick in
November 1904. Approximately 37 1904 models were produced. They were 2-cylinder, overhead
valve, 22 HP cars weighing 1850 lbs. Under Durant's leadership, Buick flourished. Buick's
first 4-cylinder car was of the "T" head design produced in 1907. In 1908 a
4-cylinder overhead valve engine design was introduced. In 1908 Durant used Buick as the
base for a new company, General Motors. In 1911, the production of the 2-cylinder Buick
was dropped. In 1914 the first 6-cylinder Buick was produced.
