Welcome to The San Diego Excursion

Banner from newell

The La Jolla Region of the Horseless Carriage Club of America is pleased to host the 2nd Annual San Diego Excursion.

The drive of vintage cars through the streets starting from the San Diego Automotive Museum to Point Loma is a display to the public to show the preservation for future generations.

The first annual event in 2025 turned out to be a joyous day for drivers and spectators and we look forward to seeing you on Sunday January 11, 2026.

General Info

You could look at this run as HCCA’s San Diego public outreach. We want the public to have a fun day celebrating an historic race and our lovely cars. In the past their enthusiasm has been our reward. We labor to be the custodians of these historical art pieces and it is a wonderful feeling to know that the public enjoys them so much. There is no cost for this run, except possibly your parking and hotel stay. The costs associated are covered by our sponsors which include:

Parking Info

Parking has been a challenge as the city is in the process of adopting new rules and charging for parking space in Balboa Park.
We'll keep you updated here with the latest information we have. We must stress that parking anywhere is at the driver's risk and assessment. Read the signs and make your best judgement. Last year many of us parked our trucks and trailers across Park Blvd from the start in an area designated #1 below on the map.
This time it appears the city will be charging for such parking. How much they will charge is still to be finalized but what is shown is our best knowledge at this point. In addition to this location where you will likely have to pay to park, we've tried to identify some areas where currently there is no fee for parking. In reality, we just need a place to park our trailers that is within a reasonable driving distance from the start.
As time gets closer we can provide suggested routes from these parking locations to the start.
Of course, parking anywhere is at your own risk and expense, if any. For those coming from out of town, we've located two hotels that allow parking of your truck and trailer overnight and while you're doing the run. In addition, the city is going to start charging for parking in front of the Auto Museum where we start our run.
Again, our best knowledge of the costs are $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents. On the #1 Park Blvd map we show where we'd like pre1943 and then 1943 and newer cars to park. If this fee is unacceptable to you then you could always check in and then park somewhere around the corner on the route and wait for the group to come by.
We work hard to try and keep this event free to drivers. The parking situation has become reality lately and something we could not avoid.

Hotel Info

We have chosen two hotels which are convenient to the route and ones that will accommodate trucks and trailers.
They are both located on Hotel Circle North in Mission Valley and we will provide maps from these hotels to the start of the run and again from the car show in Liberty Station back to your hotel.  You can arrive Saturday afternoon and stay one night, check out the next morning but leave your truck and trailer in the hotel parking lot until you return that afternoon, following the run.  Or, come Friday night and make it a fun weekend in San Diego.

You are on your own for reservations and note, the information below is our courtesy agreement with the hotels but it is on a first come first served basis.

Both hotels are approximately 5 ½ miles from the run start at the San Diego Auto Museum and 3 miles from the Car Showing at Liberty Station.
